Teacher Training & Professional Development Services

Teacher training

CPAWS Educators are often called upon
to deliver professional development workshops for teachers, environmental educators, corporate groups, and youth workers.
We offer training workshops on various environmental themes, where participants learn about the topic and participate in a demonstration of the activities. Currently, we offer the following popular workshops.

Grizzly Bears Forever: Want to find out how to effectively engage your class in learning about biology through the grizzly bear? This session leads you through some excellent activities from our secondary science resource, Grizzly Bears Forever!

SOS: Save our Species: Engage your elementary students by learning about the plight of endangered species in Alberta. In this interactive workshop, we’ll lead you through some key activities designed to get students thinking about their relationship with nature, science and social studies.

Five Minute Field Trips: This session profiles a favourite resource, "Five Minute Field Trips", designed for educators wishing to do simple and enjoyable outdoor environmental activities, including the food chain game, meet a tree and more.

Are You Up for the Challenge? Many educators want to encourage their students to do something and make a difference, but just don’t know how to get started. In this workshop, CPAWS will lead you through some simple steps to engaging your class in taking positive action in your school and community.

What About Shady Acres? In a realistic simulation activity, participants learn about nature, development, and government as they consider the proposed development of Shady Acres - a local natural area - for affordable housing. In this workshop, participants role play a condensed version of this fabulous resource.

Wetland Web of Life: What a way to learn about ecosystems! Activities include making some homemade pond sampling equipment, Animal Tags, Pond-in-the-Classroom, and a close look at some of the amazing animals that live in wetland communities.

Personalized Programs: We are also happy to develop personalized programs designed to meet the needs of specific groups. Whether participants are interested in techniques for leading safe wilderness walks, learning basic Alberta ecology, or all of the above, we can create an innovative and engaging program that will meet the group’s needs.
