CPAWS Calgary/Banff encourages you to celebrate National Wildlife Week (April 8-14, 2007)
Spring is here! The air is warmer, the grass greener, and the birdlife more plentiful. Many of you may be eager to start planning your hiking and camping adventures for the rest of the spring and summer. Here in southern Alberta, we are fortunate to have so many wonderful parks and protected areas on our doorstep.
What better way to prepare for the coming season, than to celebrate National Wildlife Week by getting out and enjoying nature!
National Wildlife Week is celebrated every year around April 10th, to honour Jack Miner, the Father of Conservation, born on that day in 1865. National Wildlife Week was created in his memory by an Act of Parliament in 1947 to create awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation in Canada. This years timely theme is Canadas North ours to protect, the worlds to cherish.
We hope youll find time to celebrate National Wildlife Week with your family and friends. Here are a few suggestions:
- Visit a local park to watch wildlife, keeping a list of animals or the signs of animals you see.
- Take your family on a Nature Scavenger Hunt. (Download a scavenger hunt checklist [Acrobat PDF file, ~185K])
- Visit your local museum or zoo to check out Alberta wildlife.
- Visit www.myfootprint.org to calculate your familys Eco-Footprint, or impact on nature. Look for small changes to reduce your footprints size by next year.
- Rent and watch An Inconvenient Truth.
- Support CPAWS ongoing education and conservation programs by making a donation or volunteering.
- Attend our monthly chapter meeting on Monday April 16 at 7:30pm at the Kahanoff Centre in Calgary. Rebecca Reeves, Parks Watch Program Coordinator for CPAWS Edmonton, will talk about Edmontons Parks Watch program that is designed to ensure the integrity of Albertas parks.
